Maths at Winsham - Our Vision

Mathematics is an important creative discipline that helps us to understand and change our world. At Winsham, we want all pupils to have a positive experience of mathematics.

We want them to develop a sense of curiosity about the subject and to see the power and the beauty of numbers.

At Winsham, we foster ‘can do’ attitudes. We believe all children can achieve in mathematics, and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts. We use mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and provide challenge through rich and sophisticated problems before acceleration through new content.

Curriculum Intent: Skills

We aim for all pupils to:

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • Solve problems by applying their mathematics, with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • Reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
  • Have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately.

Curriculum Implementation

Our maths timetable consists of a daily 45 minutes mathematics lesson which introduces a new small step in learning.

Mathematics Lesson

We use a mastery approach using White Rose Hub resources. Each lesson focuses on a manageable step of new learning based on the NC statements.

Lessons include recaps and revision od skills needed for the day's lesson, live modelling of the new learning with with explicit use of potential misunderstandings. Guided practice where the children can practise together, prior to independent their own independent application. The children then secure their skill by applying it in a different context followed by deepening their understanding with Reasoning and Problem Solving questions.

Quick Maths

Basic Maths skills, to practice and improve the speed of recall, for number bonds and times tables are a main focus which will be taught in small bite size lessons known as 'Quick Maths'. The children all have access to Times Table Rockstars and IXL (both technology based programmes) which can support and facilitate this learning in school and at home.
